Moderator Applications Rant

I've remade this thread as the last one was deleted.

This thread is in reference to: https://demonforums.net/Thread-Open-Sect...ecruitment

I think it's a bad idea to have open moderator applications. If you take a gander through the referenced thread, some of the replies are from people who've signed up on DemonForums just to become a staff member - meaning they're not active in the community at all. In other cases, most of the applications are full of ridiculous fluff to appease to whomever reads them. (ie. "I promise...", "If made a mod I will do this...", etc.)

In my 6 nearly 7 years of moderating forums, I've never once had to apply. Most of the time a site administrator will invite me to become a moderator based on my activity on the site, reputation amongst the forums, and my post quality. I'm not creating this thread to bash anyone, I'm simply stating that there are better ways of finding decent volunteers to clean up the site. In my personal experience, I think you guys are overstaffed for the current number of active members. As we learned, not everyone can be trusted. I've noticed that we've lost a moderator, a junior developer, and developer and I bet that has something to do with the recent leakage of the database.

Well, that pretty much wraps up my rant. What are your thoughts?

I don't think there's a better way finding volunteers than the "create-an-application" routine. Even if we did it your way, the end-result would be the same. There are still risks involved, one way or another. We do this with applications in order to make it formal and spread the message that we're actually looking for new staff members, along with the fact that we'd want to learn more before getting in touch with you. Once you sent an application (which lets us know that you're interested) we look over your posts for 2-4 weeks and make sure our decisions will do good for us. It's essentially the same thing, the only difference would be you answering some questions in the process.

That's why admins check users and see if they are active and contributing or not.

It's not a bad idea at all. Everyone puts in their application and we pick Staff based on various things. We look at their activity on DF, their "History" if they have any, and many more things that are considered. It's not a simple process as you may think it is. We have to ensure our Staff will do good for the site, and for the community.

I like your idea but I think the application program is better because the staff COULD pick someone that doesn't want to be staff. And then it might cause conflict. At least doing applications could show general interest in a position and you can say what experience you've had and when you'll be on. I think the current system is good all things considered.

yeah i agree i think they should have to message nova or another admin and they can give them access to a locked thread where people can post an app... that way its not spammed with people who just joined... if nova or another admin thinks you are active enought to apply then they can give access to the app.

Because your ranting about the moderator applications makes you look very professional, you have been moderating 6-7 years and out of that many years have you been ranting and looking unprofessional?
If you have a problem the way a site is ran then you should message the admins not rant out it so you look like your the top dog!
And they might want people to apply so they can see who wants to take a stab in being a moderator as just picking a random off the site they might not want the staff rank and then they would have to find someone else and its a bit of a piss take really.

So if you want mod that bad to rant about it you should apply like the rest of the forum have and yes you will get inactive people apply but how will that effect your application?? you make it what it is if its shit then thats only your fault.

At the end of the day you all are showing how much you care about becoming mod by ranting over the why people are picked... This just show how immature you are, I may be the biggest nut job on here but I know my place, Something tell me you lot know other wise, just like @fxyt said don't like it take it up with the admins don't try and bring in that you have been mod for 6 - 7 years then rant about the posses like come one, grow up...
