I think I understand your question..I don't think a website has to be aesthetically pleasing to be a good site. Just like how in a video game, the graphics don't have to be these hyper rendered models with incredible art to make it good, its normally the quality of gameplay and story that players want (for most single player games, and in my opinion). However, with a website its only slightly different. Websites have either have to have tons of content with a decent community, or have a shit community with really quality content. Visuals on a site are normally not that big of a deal, unless the site is being advertised and trying to grow. Visuals are the key aspect of advertising and without good graphics and adverts, a site won't grow as effective as another with stronger ads will.
