any good programs that are meant to be cracked/hacked to learn how to hack from?

So recently I read this 'how to' about hacking, and it talks about finding a program, something that maybe you wouldn't typically use, or a program that you'd use and have opinions about and hack it. Basically it tells you to change some code to get it to do something.

Anyways, I want to find a program that I could hack.
1. It preferably has to be open source
2. I can open the program on linux
3. It has some objective to it, kind of like CTF, trying to find a password or a flag.

So if anyone could help, that would be appreciated.

I don't know anything about linux, but I can say you should probably first decide what kind of hacking you want to learn. Also, learning to just use programs that do most or all of the work for you that someone else created is just more of a "script kiddie" situation. If you wanna learn real hacking you should start with learning a programming language.
This is just my opinion, I don't know if I'm fully accurate.

If you cannot figure out how to even get started or even get through most of the challenges, then it means you have a lot of homework to do. Good luck and never give up!
